Welcome to the D.O.N.U.T.

We are a place for independent ventures in art, architecture and design located in the heart of Zürich.

The D.O.N.U.T. vibrates, gives and absorbs.
We like to define our space as a perpetually evolving mockup showcase. A place that functions as an undisturbed surface, where thoughts establish and things materialize over time. We (×) invite artists and designers to showcase their work, to teach us, to learn from us, to mutually grow within creative processes augmenting exchange.

What we do: The D.O.N.U.T. initiates and hosts theme related seminars, talks, screenings and exhibitions.

Yrjö Kukkapuro’s EXPERIMENT Series:

In 1981, the year of the first Memphis group show, Yrjö had left behind his seventies aesthetics and started experimenting with shapes, colors and new materials searching for a fresh language with a postmodern nod. The result was a collection of prototypes named EXPERIMENT that were produced in collaboration with AVARTE and succesfully introduced at the Milan Fair in 1982. The initial design was an ergonomically functional, padded plywood seat, with a metal tube frame and added stylized wooden elements derived from nature. 'Blue Wave', 'Green Moss Path', 'Red Firecracker Burst' were the chosen decorative forms for the small collection of easy chairs, a sofa and a triangular wavy sofa table.

RESIDENT SHOWCASE

20th Nov — 18th Dec 2025
LA BALADE E(S)T LA BALLADE
Roland Tännler

The photograph is a physical key to memory cells informed by patterns of perception.
It is a footprint on a path navigating recurring visual impulses of a romantic wanderer.

Roland Tännler shows recent work on an intimate scale, incorporating documentary images and compositions which play on a hue of irony and surprise us with subtle visual distortions.

Roland Tännler, La balade est la ballade

Roland Tännler is a Zürich based photographer. It is here, where he finished his education in the 90s and where he has worked as an independent professional to this day. He has made a part of the UNDEND journey since the early years. UNDEND was never interested in a classic form of documenting architecture but in an artistic view of its own right. Roland’s architectural photography foregoes a processual manner of grasping the essence of the architectural layout and spacial flow. Shooting spots, lighting situations and the play of color contrasts become as important as welcoming the random beauty of construction sites and their protagonists at work—the outcome always being genuine and vibrant.

LA BALADE E(S)T LA BALLADE is the second exhibition of works by Roland Tännler at our showcase and we are most happy to welcome him back!

The D.O.N.U.T. invites artists, designers, writers, poets, scientists, cooks, film makers and musicians to share insights to their practice and to use our space as a temporary play ground and RESIDENT SHOWCASE. We are looking forward to lectures, discussions, readings, dinners, screenings, live performances, and exhibitions.

ZÜRICH ADJACENCIES by Roland Tännler

Zürich Adjacencies is an exhibition of works Roland Tännler conceived over the last decade. 50 everyday pictures taken within a radius of 11 km while rambling Zürich neighborhoods on everyday rounds. The series of photographs stem from curiosity of the moment and sheer pleasure in random occurences with visual potential. It is a way of tracing and documenting fractions of time where magic happens and unexpected interrelations start playing inverse to the perpetual pulse of the streets — a vision fluctuating between notions of objective concretion and aesthetic abstraction orchestrated by a lyric mind.

»I often take pictures while waiting. Literally waiting for the train, waiting for someone who is late, waiting for my kids; it is within these parenthesis of time that my eyes start to wander and where I take note.«

The digital images, specificly chosen to form pairs, groups or adjacencies within the series, are processed and transferred as digital UV prints on objets trouvés — 50 ply wood boards from old archival cabinets, all measuring exact 31 x 35cm, each bearing individual signs of material use. The cellar find in the studio of the photographer eventually merges with the applied photos to 50 unique objects.

Roland Tännlers exhibition proposal is very much congenial to the D.O.N.U.T. motto and we are thrilled to have him doing donuts at the D.O.N.U.T. as our second resident showcase.

POSTER SERIES by Marc Droz

Marc Droz is a graphic and type designer who lives and works in Zürich. He has created the graphic identity, website and signage for our new event space among numerous other collaborations with UNDEND architects over the years. He is the first to be appointed as D.O.N.U.T.’s Resident Showcase.

The poster series is based on various paper collages. Marc Droz likes to play with image material that he has collected over years, browsing thrift stores. Cut outs from magazines and educational childrens books from the 70’s play the key role and are arranged in surreal and humorous juxtapositions. The common raven towering over the American car f.i. in »Kolkrabe« — the bird genius questioning the mankind—layered in complex interweave of three color raster grids an dots, that reach an intricate, almost textile character, is typical for Marc Droz’s work and genuine language as a designer.

The prints were realized on silk screens at Maschinenzoo in Lenzburg in collaboration with Axel Friedrich.
